La Paz’s main tourist activity appears to be cycling down the death road – a 56km route in the Yungas region of northern Bolivia. In total, the route descends around 3,500m, transiting quickly from cool Altiplano terrain to rainforest as it winds through very steep hillsides and atop cliffs.
In 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank christened it as the “world’s most dangerous road” and (according to Wikipedia) in 2006, one estimate stated that 200 to 300 travellers were killed yearly along the road.
There is now a paved route that bypasses the original death road and takes the vast majority of regional traffic. The original road seems only to serve thrill-seeking tourists and cycle tourers staying in La Paz with some time to kill.
